Reading

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

I recently picked up a couple of new Fiction novels from the library. Reading has recently started to feel empty… but I can’t tell why. maybe by discussing it a bit, I can see where things have gone wrong for me.

I used to love to read. Even in grade school, I remember devouring Anne McCaffrey novels in class, or perusing the adult fiction section of the library while others my age were picking their way through the ‘Teens’ shelf, and if the opportunity were to present itself, I would tear through a new Discworld book in a heartbeat, but I’ve noticed over the years that every book I read has done less and less to sate my appetite…

Lets start with the first book I read. Typically, although I would say that I am a Sci-Fi/Fantasy Geek, I tend to stay away from most of the books in that genre unless I know ahead of time the author, the subject matter, or some good word of mouth, but as I was hurriedly scanning the shelves at the library with the Mankey pulling and screaming and causing a ruckus, I noticed a book that somehow seemed interesting just from the title and the cover to me. I know, I know, ‘never judge a book by its cover’, but I took it home anyway.

Achieving is Believeing

achieved

In an effort to get more out of our WoW experience, Louisa and I have been attempting to earn as many Achievements as possible. In particular, lately, we’ve been trying to go back and 2-man all of the Burning Crusade Instances that we never got to play (all of them).

It’s been a lot of fun, running through and seeing all these instances, and then getting an achievement at the end. We’ve done Mana-Tombs, Auchenai Crypts, Mechanar, Botanica, and Shattered Halls, successfully, all within the last week. I don’t have too many ‘normal’ instances to run in Outland before getting the Outland Dungeonmaster Achievement.

Rising Numbers

Monday, March 9th, 2009

Saw this article today… I’m glad to see the number rising, but I’m surprised it isn’t much higher.
I wonder if people, when confronted with a survey like this, tend to say: “Well, I was raised X, so I’ll answer X.”
Otherwise, I can’t understand why it’s not +50%?
Also, I wish non-religious/atheists would do more to promote that way of thinking – I heard a guy on the radio who was supposedly the spokesman for an anti-religion movement (they put a bunch of advertisements on busses and things), but he was very mild, and non-challenging: “we just want to let other people know they’re not alone out there, we’re not trying to change anyone’s mind.” Why not? :P

magic_item

I miss playing D&D.

I used to play with a group of people, not long after I graduated from High School. We would meet and play for a couple of hours, maybe once or twice a month. It was great fun, since our DM was very good, and enjoyed pulling strange by awesome things on the party.

Update Apology

Monday, March 2nd, 2009

Sorry for all the updates I’ve put out today – I tried to make some minor tweaks and changes to both of my plugins, only to find out after the fact that there was an improper call in the js file – so if you updated earlier today and are now getting the message to update again – this should fix any errors received after the earlier update.

On Hold

Monday, February 9th, 2009

Thanks to the sudden, surprise explosion of my computer at work, many of my projects are on hold until I can get things back into working order again. Notably, my wow-guild WP Plugin, which has been started, but is not yet ready for release, will probably be pushed back another week or two.
A certain other project of which I cannot speak is also on hold for a day or two, but this project will take precedence over the others. More details as they become available.

Catastrophic Failure

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

Things always seem to fall apart at the worst times…

Our hot water heater started shooting sparks the other day, so we deduced that we needed to replace the upper element. After flooding the house with scalding hot water, and then wrestling with the old element, which had been the wrong kind to begin with (someone had bent, and twisted, and crammed the old element to make it fit…), we replaced it, turned on the water, and then later turned on the power, only to have the whole thing burst with hot water from the emergency pressure valve, and flood the house again.
